The Ancient Christian Faith
The Eastern Orthodox Church preserves the ancient Christian faith as entrusted by the apostles of Christ.
Rooted in apostolic succession, the unbroken line of bishops tracing back to the apostles ensures the continuity of the Church’s authority, theology and teachings.
This sacred Tradition encompasses the faith, worship, and doctrine handed down through generations, safeguarding the truths revealed by Christ and guarded by the Holy Spirit.

Apostolic Succession and Pre-Denominational Identity
The Orthodox Church maintains an unbroken line of apostolic succession, tracing its leadership directly back to the Apostles of Christ. This continuity is inseparable from its claim as the original, undivided Christian Church — not a denomination, but the Church herself.
Holy Tradition
Beyond the Holy Scripture, Orthodoxy holds Holy Tradition as the living transmission of the faith — the teachings, liturgical life, and conciliar decisions of the Church preserved through the centuries by the Holy Spirit.
Liturgical Worship and Sacramental Life
Orthodox worship is characterized by its rich liturgical heritage, engaging all the senses in the praise of God. The Holy Mysteries — above all the Divine Liturgy — are the centre of Orthodox life, the place where heaven and earth meet and the faithful are united to Christ.

In Orthodox Christianity, the relationship with Christ is both deeply personal and profoundly communal.
While some Western traditions focus predominantly on an individual relationship with Jesus, Orthodoxy embraces a holistic vision: personal communion with Christ is inseparable from participation in the life of the Church, His Body. Through the Holy Mysteries, prayer, liturgical worship, and Holy Tradition.
Orthodox Christians experience both personal transformation and unity with the whole community of faith — the living and the departed alike.
This is theosis: union with God, the very purpose of human life.

St Mary’s Orthodox Church is an English speaking parish in the ancient and original Christian church, the Orthodox Church.
Our parish is blessed to operate under the guidance and leadership of His Eminence George Archbishop of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand (ROCOR).
